Someday, I shall slip beyond
The gravitational lull
Past the rind of our anchored sky
Into the pantomime of muted glimmer.
No jubilant rocket flames,
Nor the usual cosmic pyrotechnics
But a corridor of velvet quiet,
Where photons parade in unhurried tangents.
I imagine my fingertips grazing
The piano-keys of starlight
Each note an eternal psalter,
A thousand tongues tasting each page
I would rest on a drifting shard of meteor
Unnamed, uncharted
And trace the bruise-colored horizon
Where day concedes to eternal elsewhere.
How the silent vacuum
Beckons with a cry not heard
A gossamer call for voyagers
To unmoor from commonplace burdens.
In that cinder-gray domain,
Dreams are pressed like fossils
Upon obsidian emptiness
Waiting to be recognized as truth.
I hunger for the still of an aurora
Slipping through blackness unopposed
A quivering curtain of phosphorescent secrecy
Wafting in triumph above my head.
No cliché planets or tidy rings,
But fractal orbits of intangible whispers
Echoing from corners of a cosmic library
Only the bold dare open.
There, I will pen my testimony
On interstellar particle
In script shaped by awe and terror combined.
Though mortal respiration may quiver
In the rigorous chill,
My spirit will contend,
Free of our terrestrial drift,
And wholeheartedly at home.
I long to exhale my wonder
Vantablack formless breaths
In that immense, flat and bristling void
To wander among forgotten satellites
And adress them with curious eyes.
For who, in the face of so much possibility,
Can endure the ordinary forever?
