Feathers feathered on black bird’s head
A raven’s eye, coal black and cold
From brow, cocked right and furrowed, said
You’ve lost your fear, but keep your dread!
And wincing up at the crow above
Your pace steps up to leave behind
That accusing bird, that twisted dove
It sings of failure, of defiling love
Grasping upwards to reach its beak
To cause it harm your fingers stretch
You must quell its call; it must cease to speak
But when hand meets bird, you seem too weak
But then a savior’s voice rings out
Beware this bird! For death it brings;
Its melodies drown in a smothered cry,
Heed not the raven’s whispered lie.
And life it seems then filled my limbs
Much stronger; kneeling on broken earth
Though the raven charged with unholy canticles
Its power was gone, and its eyes were dim
I chose to live, my spirit sealed
To worship Christ, my spirit- to yield.
