The sky splits
a great and thundering wound,
spilling glow like molten blaze,
the breath of heaven, white-hot,
and the voice
oh, the voice shakes the mountains.
The ground writhes beneath my feet.
Lightning cuts jagged scars in the air,
splintering the dark
splitting my bones,
my very pith,
my mind.
I cover my ears, but it does not help.
I shut my eyes, but I still see.
“Who can stand before You?”
The seas churn,
the earth breaks,
the stars recoil.
And then
Stillness.
Not silence, per se –
but something deeper,
as if the freight of eternity
settles into my chest.
A murmur now,
muted as stifled gasp,
yet heavier than mountains
a coal pressed to my lips,
a name carved in my soul.
“I AM.”
And suddenly,
the ground is steady,
the wind is calm,
the blaze no longer burns
except in me.
