Author’s Note:
This, what I call a “Fugue Poem”, is likely the most technically ambitious piece I’ve crafted. It features three standalone mini-arias, each reflecting the same aria from a unique vantage point – and they interlock, flowing together as one cohesive poem.
But there’s another layer: if you take the first line of each stanza, in order and treat them as a single line, then move to the second line of each stanza, etc., it forms an entirely new poem. So, on this page, there are five separate poems, layered together. This contrapuntal design echoes the musical fugue, where a single theme is introduced and then woven through multiple voices, layered and reinterpreted in turn.
The piece emerged from years of revisions and dozens of abandoned drafts. I hope readers will appreciate both the surface narratives and the hidden structure brewing beneath.
A “Fugue Poem” inspired by “The Queen of the Night Aria” by Mozart
Part A – The Mother
I carve the sky with blades of blackest bedrock,
A seat from thunder’s deep, resounding groan,
My voice a scourge that tears the gusts in two,
The stars my crest, their glow my chiseled throne,
To mark the dark with wrath I fiercely hew.
My tongue sets flame to air with searing spite,
A kiln that thrives on shadows’ twisted frame,
Each sound a barb to pierce their unguarded flesh,
I raise the winds where day retreats from sight,
And shake the earth beneath my iron claim.
Her frail dissent provokes my tightened fist,
A gnat that buzzes near a conflagration’s embrace,
I’ll grind her form to powder with one swift blow,
Her sigh a wisp I’ll crush and not assist,
Till vengeance reigns where the gift unearned once held its place.
The moon’s my shield, its edge a gleaming dart,
It mirrors rage that surges without cease,
I’ll flood their lands with night’s unyielding the pull,
No aurora shall crack this realm I shape apart,
For I am night, and all shall bend to me.
Part B – The Daughter
I chase the morn with palms once clasped in chains,
A wren unleashed, my exhale a fragile stem,
The vault above now parts where dusk once ruled,
His touch a spark that frees me from my pains,
To grow where night had etched its bitter hem.
Her roar, a gust that twists me to its whim,
Still drones within the chambers of my skull,
Yet rays of glow now gleam through bars she made,
I shed her bonds, a shell too harsh and grim,
And soar where freedom’s throb beats unafraid.
The steel she bids me hold grows odd and bleak,
Its mass a gloom that weighs upon my grasp,
I’d rather glide with breezes muted and clear,
Than scar my hands where her decrees bespeak,
For peace is mine, not fury’s jagged clasp.
I’ll chart my trail through spines that claw and rend,
A streak of gold that spills from deep inside,
Her shade withdraws, a the pull too fierce to bind,
The stars now chant of morns that never end,
And I am aurora, unbound by her design.
Part C – Mozart
I bid the strings to growl with wild allure,
Each chord a gleam that springs from mind to breeze,
The boards a kiln where cries and laughter meet,
I mold their zeal, their woe, with hands so sure,
A squall I craft from ink and flesh’s ease.
Her ire breaks calm with shrill, unyielding force,
A blast I guide with meter’s firm control,
The pipes ascend, a balm to dull her edge,
Yet still I feed the dark her tones endorse,
To prance where strife and beauty share their soul.
The girl’s glow strain – a thread I ply with guile,
Outshines the press of spite that trails her song,
I twist the brass to lift her gentle rise,
Their fray a torch I spark with every trial,
A tale of clash and balm that I prolong.
The shroud drops low, my throb a steady beat,
Their shouts still peal within this hall of sound,
I’ve built a world from whispers, steel, and cries,
Each note a block, each pause a glass complete,
And I, the forge, stand tall where they resound.
